After such a drawn-out winter, it’s a joy to see colorful blooms,
blue sky, and hordes of people spilling outdoors. The coming of
warm weather means it’s time to get out and enjoy all the things
the city has to offer. It’s also the occasion to set repairs and renovations
into motion.
In the last few weeks, I’ve been fortunate to see ducks and
peacocks at the Prospect Park Zoo, plant radish seeds at the
Lefferts Historic House, ride the NYC Ferry up and down the
East River, and take in more sun than in the previous three
months combined.
On the renovation front, I’m endlessly inspired by the creativity
of my neighbors and fellow Brooklyn residents. Their beautiful
spaces remind me that someday we will see light at the end of
the tunnel and be able to do the fun things like decorate.
Designer Delia Kenza Brennen and artist and choreographer
Júlio Leitão bring those fun things to another level in their magical
Clinton Hill brownstone — where murals, masks and sculpture
playfully mix with minimalist updates and historic details.
Another big inspiration and proponent of surrounding yourself
with art, creativity and things you love is interior designer
Glenn Gissler. His sophisticated Brooklyn Heights duplex is a
repository of art and antiques and a haven.
Carefully curated and beautifully arranged objects —
from ancient pottery to pieces by early modernist designer
Christopher Dresser to art by contemporary American artist
Donald Baechler — are a valuable reminder that beloved
works endure. Don’t throw out originals!
