2 JANUARY 13 - JANUARY 19, 2017 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP BAY RIDGE BAR RAISES FUNDS TO SUPPORT LGBTQ YOUTH Bay Ridge wine bar the Owl’s Head announced on Monday, January 9, that it had raised over $1,000 at a December 23 event for the It Gets Better Project, a nonprofit organization that provides support to LGBTQ young people worldwide. Now, the bar has announced it will hold LGBTQ+ Nights, with a portion of revenue being donated to LGBTQ charities. Money donated in January will go to the It Gets Better Project, and each month a related charity will be chosen by the bar and its customers. The Owl’s Head is open seven days a week and is located at 479 74th Street. Its LGBTQ+ Nights are Mondays from 6 p.m. to midnight. —Patrick Weinstein PERP GETS 20 YEARS FOR WILLIAMSBURG STABBING A 59-year-old Manhattan man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for fatally stabbing a man he felt was making inappropriate contact with his girlfriend in 2011, Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced on Monday, January 9. According to trial testimony, Ramon Escobar was at the corner of South Ninth Street and Roebling Street in Williamsburg in April, 2011 when he got into an argument with 46-year-old David Fernandez regarding his girlfriend. Escobar was heard saying “I am going to kill him.” The 59-year-old purchased eight-inch kitchen knives from a local store, which evidence showed were used to stab Fernandez in the left thigh, piercing Fernandez’s bone and severing major blood vessels, causing fatal bleeding. —Anna Spivak NEW BILL BY SUNSET POL WOULD REQUIRE BREATHALYZER TESTS FOR PILOTS New legislation introduced by Assemblymember Felix Ortiz would require all pilots leaving New York airports to submit to breathalyzer tests before takeoff. According to Ortiz, given recent news that an American Airlines pilot had failed two sobriety tests before getting into the cockpit and taking off on a commercial flight, measures needed to be taken to insure the safety of passengers and staff on board jetliners. “That’s unacceptable,” contended Ortiz, stressing,  “The life and safety of pilots, flight attendants and the flying public must be protected.” —Urwah Ahmad Beyond at Liberty View celebrates opening BY JAIME DEJESUS JDEJESUS@ BROOKLYNREPORTER.COM It’s beyond Sunset’s customers’ wildest dreams. After a successful soft opening, Beyond at Liberty View Industrial Plaza at Third Avenue and 31st Street has celebrated its official grand opening. On Thursday, January 12, the ribbon was cut on the awaited unique shopping venue that screams Brooklyn. The shopping center includes Bed Bath & Beyond, Face Values, buybuy BABY and Cost Plus World Market. One thing that makes the center unique is the dining area which features tons of local eats. Bay Market Kitchen has already become a favorite among foodies, said its manager. “It’s been amazing so far,” said Courtney Hamilton, general manager of the eatery. “It’s basically American type cuisine, such as hot dogs, hamburgers and sandwiches but it’s on a different level. It’s top quality. Everything is organic and most of what we do is local and Brooklyn based, including the pastries and the desserts. It’s great that we utilize local sources and people love that. It’s great quality as well.” Those who are in sweet tooth mode can enjoy treats from Sweet & Savory Waffles & Soft Serve, which features unique treats such as the Birthday Cake Waffle, which features a cake batter waffle, whip cream and one free topping, as well as Brooklyn's Blue Marble ice cream. “The ice cream is amazing,” said customer Alexis Apostolakos. The center also features Market Coffee, which touts high end drinks and pastries. Even at the stores, it’s not all about shopping. Michael Johnson finishing some ‘smores. doing samplings,” said Michael Johnson, district manager for the store, who was serving up 'smores on Wednesday evening. “In general, we do a company driven one, such as a game day tasting of snacks for game day to try to show everyone how we pull entertainment together and make it super simple at home while representing products from all over the world.” Bed Bath & Beyond also includes a special Born in Brooklyn section, which features designers that are based in Brooklyn. It’s exclusive to this store. Buybuy BABY creates a safe space with its feeding and changing area for new parents, and Face Values provides a wide range of toiletries, cosmetics and drugstore items. There are also activities galore planned for the shopping venue. On Sunday, January 15, at 2 p.m. attendees will be able to meet artist David Cortes, the sculptor of the Captain America statue, which is currently housed in the shopping center. If early reactions are any indication, Sunset Park has a huge hits on its hands. “I really like it,” said Dyker resident Mia Soto. “It’s my first time and it’s really beautiful. My favorite so far is the ice cream they serve and Face Values. I’ll probably be here every week.”
