66 JANUARY 13 - JANUARY 19, 2017 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP SPORTS PYO Falcons sting Chiefs, 39-22 BY ROBERT CAVALIERE The Parkville Youth Organization Chiefs and Falcons pulled out all the stops, especially in the fi rst half of their recent rumble. Ruben “TNT” Perez took the snaps and used Jadin “Iceman” Goodman, Sean O’Brien and himself to break through the Chiefs’ defenses to get in scoring position. Then the “Iceman” muscled his way through the Chiefs’ line to draw fi rst blood. Dylan “Postman” Bove retaliated with Sami Sarsour and Solomon “the Warrior” Mercado to fi rst and goal, then took the pigskin over for a Chiefs’ touchdown. The Chiefs kicked o to the Falcons. Then, the “Iceman” received the ball and another Falcon touchdown was scored, making it 12-6, Falcons. The Chiefs then began to wage war on the gridiron, obtaining four fi rst downs. The journey highlighted the “Postman” calling the plays and Sarsour busting through the Falcon line, gaining two of the four fi rst downs. Steven Navarro was responsible for the other two fi rst downs. From the three-yard line, the “Postman” took the snap, gave it to Sarsour and nothing could stop him. He busted through the Falcon line and 12-all fl ashed on the scoreboard. A two-point conversion kick put the Chiefs ahead, 14-12. This turn of events didn’t sit well with the Falcons who began their assault with “TNT” Perez fi ring a bullet pass to O’Brien for a fi rst down. Perez then handed o to O’Brien and he battled for Parkville turf to gain another fi rst down before Navarro and Ma n u e l Ruiz-Torres brought him down. Andrew “Mad Dog” Kashman saved the day for the Falcons, recovering a fumble. Then, Perez tried three times in vain to move the ball because of obstacles like Luka “Bone Crusher” Tsituashuili and Isaiah Chico. The Chiefs had possession again and despite strong opposition gained three fi rst downs. Sarsour took the hando from the “Postman” and made the delivery to the end zone for six more points. The Chiefs were successful to kick for two extra points, giving them an impressive 22-12 advantage. Throwing in the towel is not in the Falcon playbook. Perez threw an awesome spiral and hit “Ice Man” Goodman for six points. Perez took the ball himself for the point a er and closed the gap to 22-19, Chiefs. The Chiefs couldn’t bounce back a er four attempts for glory. Isaiah Rosado, Matthew Paleologos and Daniel LaCarta were too much for the o ensive assault. The Falcon machine just kept on churning. “TNT” Perez exploded again, hitting O’Brien with a touchdown pass. The Chiefs failed on their next possession with a pass interception by O’Brien. The Falcons cashed in with a touchdown, seizing the 31-22 Dylan “Postman” Bove makes an awesome textbook tack on Quarterback Ruben “TNT” Perez and Edwin Perez is on hand to make a slick fumble recovery. lead at the end of the fi rst half. The second half produced two touchdowns and one two-point conversion kick for the Falcons, giving them 14 points. The lackluster performance of the Chiefs in the second half was a total metamorphosis from the fi rst half. Their fi nal drive brought back that gridiron excitement. It was mostly a Photos courtesy of Robert Cavaliere Bove ground attack except for one run by Sarsour and a pass to Ruiz-Torres. They earned three fi rst downs and found themselves at fi rst and goal. Their enormous drive produced zilch on the boards but acknowledgement that the Chiefs possess talent, determination and teamwork. They just ran out of time and the Falcons went home with the 39-22 victory. Fontbonne JV keeps pace with Varsity BY JIM DOLAN A er a successful December run, the (5-0) Varsity Bonnies have taken a 3-0 fi rst place lead in the Varsity A Division League a er beating St. Edmund Prep 55-27 last week. Jill Howard (16 points), Brianne O’Donnell (14 points) and Meaghan Glynn (11 points) continue to be Fontbonne’s top scorers early in the season as the Bonnies get set to defend their top spot against their cross-borough rivals from Bishop Kearney this week. Just like their upperclassmen sisters, the Fontbonne JV is o to one of its better starts this season, according to JV Head Coach Anthony Bartholomeo, with an overall record of 5-3 and a league-leading 3-0 record. “We had a really good turnout this year,” said the eighth year JV coach who will be guiding his daughter Allie for her last season before she moves up to the Varsity. Last season, Bartholomeo took a basic freshmen team of only eight players to a second place fi nish to play in the fi nals. This season, with a squad of 13, the JV has four returning players along with a strong freshmen bench to make another run at the title. In the JV’s most recent 46-31 win over St. Edmund Prep, Bartholomeo’s returning “Fab Four” tholomeo’s led the way as Ryan Carlton played strong up the middle on defense and Winter Charles led the team in rebounds as well as in scoring with 17 points. Co-captains Shannon Greene with non 11 points and Allie Bartholomeo with 10 points rounded out the list of high scorers. Amen It’s gotta hurt Ruben “TNT” Perez to be tackled by Luka “Bone Crusher” Tsituashuili and Isaiah “Lethal Weapon” Chico at the same time.
