During the Press’ “Power List” event in Woodbury, Morey announced that earlier in the day, he had fi nalized an agreement to transfer ownership of the Long Island Press to Schneps Communications, which owns more than 20 publications and websites Flushing House to honor four community leaders at annual gala United Adult Ministries, the parent company of Flushing House, will honor four outstanding persons with the Rose Kryzak Senior Leadership Award and the Older Adult Ministry Award, during an annual fundraising gala on Th ursday, May 11, at Leonard’s Palazzo in Great Neck. Th is year’s honorees are Victoria Schneps-Yunis, publisher of Schneps Communications; Dr. Ann Marie D’Angelo PMHCNS, BC, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a Board Certifi ed Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist and Geriatric Specialist; Dr. Paul Engel DHL, LCSW, Executive Director of Flushing Jewish Community Council, NY; and Denise James RN, MA, MBA, Director of Case Management and Social Work at Flushing Hospital Medical Center. Th e awards are named aft er the late Rose Kryzak, a prodigious public advocate who fought for the rights of older adults. A resident of Flushing House for her last 13 years, she passed on June 24, 1999, at 99 years of age. Kryzak was best known for spearheading passage of New York State’s landmark 1987 Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) legislation. But earlier in her life she fought for passage of Social Security, for the poor and elderly, during federal budget cuts of the 1980s, for increases in New York’s share of Supplemental Security Income, and for mandatory Medicare assignments and passage of universal health care. Since 2000, Kryzak’s family has attended each Gala to help honor the award winners for their continuing eff orts on behalf of older adults. Th e award winners must have a record of establishing legislation, or operating/expanding programs that benefi t the older adult population, or a good track record of advocacy and securing funds for senior programs. To keep her legacy alive and further the many causes she cared for, UAM established the Rose Kryzak Awards in 2000. Th is year’s program will also include the prestigious “Older Adult Ministry Award,” which recognizes an individual from the Presbytery of New York City, Presbytery of Long Island or the Reformed Church of America whose service and commitment to older adults exemplifi es the love of Jesus Christ. Joshua Schneps, CEO of the company that his mother, Victoria, founded 35 years ago and is now President, concluded the Power List program and spoke about the transition to a room fi lled with 250 power brokers on Long Island. “My mother Victoria and I are humbled and excited about the opportunity to expand our reach on Long Island and take the helm of such a venerable news media brand that has meant so much to the Island,” Joshua told the crowd. He spoke briefl y about his mother’s deep roots in advocacy and how she built an organization around the idea that an independent press is one of the most valuable aspects to a community. Schneps Communications currently operates other media outlets on Long Island including the Bethpage Best of Long Island program and hosts the annual Long Island Power Women in Business and Kings of Long Island events. As of the sale, the Long Island Press welcomed an average of 250,000 unique visitors per month and had amassed more than 500 local, state and national awards during its tenure under Morey. Th e digital audience of Schneps Communications now exceeds over 2.5 million page views per month, 200,000 email subscribers and over 300,000 social media followers throughout Long Island, Queens and Brooklyn. Th e tenor of the evening was somewhat muted in the beginning as Morey recalled the emotional journey from starting the Press to handing off the reins to Schneps. Morey then called Joshua Schneps to the stage to present the fi nal award of the evening and pass the ceremonial torch from publisher to publisher. As Schneps took the podium, Morey took his place in the crowd and watched as the Enterprise Business Award was given to Linda Armyn of Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Schneps closed the program with a pledge to continue the commitment to journalistic quality and integrity that the Long Island Press has been known for over the past 15 years. Th e Long Island Press began as an alternative newsweekly publication in January of 2003. Morey Publishing eventually transitioned from a weekly publication to monthly four years ago before fi nally migrating strictly online where it continues to grow its readership and thrive as a business.
