Twenty fourth-graders at P.S./M.S. 200, located at 70-10 164th St., now have access to newly refurbished violins and aft er-school, twice-weekly lessons led by  Midori & Friends, a music education organization. Th e new program is funded by $20,000 in a Cultural Aft er-School Adventures (CASA) grant funding allocated by local Councilman Rory Lancman. Th e educational program, which began in January, will culminate in June with a student performance showcasing their newly acquired skills. Midori & Friends provides music education programs to NYC students in the goal of sparking young people’s creativity  and boosting their excitement about school. On April 20, the organization featured a performance from one of its Signature Series Ensembles, the Toomai String Quintet, for students and parents at the school’s multicultural dinner. “Th is year, our fourth-graders have had the unique opportunity to take violin lessons aft er school twice per week with an instructor from Midori & Friends, courtesy of a grant from Councilman Rory Lancman,” school  principal Kevin McAuliff e said. “With this grant, we were able to refurbish over 20 old violins, and now the students can take them home to practice between classes each week. Arts education is essential for young learners and I am confi dent that our students will cherish this experience. And who knows? Maybe the next Joshua Bell will come from P.S./M.S. 200!” “Th e activities students get involved in outside the classroom, especially in the arts, play an important role in shaping their development and growth.” Lancman said. “I am proud to provide the funding necessary for P.S./M.S. 200 students to have the opportunity to learn how to play the violin, and look forward to hearing the students display their skills.” Photo via Shutterstock Sponsored by
