38 The Courier sun • JUNE 9, 2016 for breaking news visit www.qns.com VALEDICTORIANS CABINET MEMBER DELIVERS COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS AT YORK COLLEGE Graduates of the York College Class of 2016 enjoyed a special address from U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro during the institution’s 46th commencement exercises on the Jamaica campus last week. Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio, Texas, was appointed to the post by President Obama at the start of his second term in the White House. Marcia Keizs, the college’s president, later presented degrees to the graduates. Scholars earn high honors at Queens College graduation More than 3,000 students of Queens College graduated from the Flushing institution of higher learning last week. Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation Ford, the nation’s second largest philanthropic organization, served this year’s commencement speaker. Dr. Ira Katznelson, co-founder of Politics and Society, one of the foremost journals of the social sciences and humanities, was also awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters. Willnide Lindor, who is graduating summa cum laude and is the recipient of the Paul Klapper Scholarship, the Paul Zweig Award in Comparative Literature, and the Silverstein-Peiser Award in nonfiction from the English Department, served as the student speaker. Outstanding graduates include three Fulbright recipients and two Salk Scholars: Linda Mathew (MSEd), who specializes in English as a Second Language and will head to Thailand for a year through Fulbright’s English Teaching Assistant program; Yvette Deane, who is heading to Israel for research with a sociology professor at Hebrew University on the topic of Middle East conflict; and Shani Small, who will use her Fulbright grant to study global justice at the University of Sheffield in England.
