New York City FC Academy team will call St. John’s Queens stadium home next season By ANTHO NY GIU DICE [email protected] @A_GiudiceReport St. John’s University is opening its doors to one of New York’s newest teams, the New York City FC (NYCFC) Academy. The club’s Academy team will call Belson Stadium home next year and will train four days a week on the Queens campus, as well as host all of their home games and Talent Centers at the “state-of-theart” facility. Belson Stadium opened in 2002 and has more than 2,100 seats for fans, and lighting for night games. “St. John’s University is excited to welcome the New York City FC Academy to our campus,” said John Diffley, senior associate athletic director, in a statement. “We believe Belson Stadium is a perfect fit, and the New York City FC participants will be pleased with the top athletic facilities, and have an outstanding experience on our campus.” In addition to playing at the stadium, the NYCFC Academy team will have access to the locker rooms, strength and conditioning areas, and film rooms for game and training breakdowns. “We are really happy to move our Academy to a new home at St. John’s University in Queens,” said Claudio Reyna, NYCFC sporting director, in a statement. “St. John’s has a central location in New York City with topclass athletic facilities that will give our players and coaches a stable home base for training and competitive matches throughout the season. As we continue to grow our Academy, we are confident that St. John’s will help us to provide a fantastic platform for our younger players.” Photo courtesy NY Shamrock Soccer Club The NY Shamrock Soccer Club may avoid relegation after getting a game decision overturned. NY Shamrocks have decision overturned, may avoid relegation By ANTHO NY GIU DICE [email protected]/@A_GiudiceReportt One Queens soccer club is fighting to stay in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League’s (CSL) top division, and it has nothing to do with their performance on the pitch. After a disappointing 1-0 loss to Polonia NY in a Division 1 game on May 15, The NY Shamrock Soccer Club filed an official protest claiming that Polonia used a suspended player during the game. The loss could have relegated the Shamrocks to a lower division within the CSL. The CSL Arbiter looked at their case, and on May 25 awarded the game to the Shamrocks as a 3-0 forfeit. “This is a decision in favor of fair play,” said Sean Mc Mullan, NY Shamrock Soccer Club president. “Kevin Grogan (technical director), Stevie Doyle (reserves coach) and their players worked hard all year and they deserve to remain in the top division of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League. We will adhere to the next steps and we hope to have this outcome finalized as soon as possible.” “The players were amazing all year and more than deserve to stay up,” Grogan said. “They 100 percent earned it and so did the club. Based on any other year with the normal format, we would have been safe at Christmas.” Polonia NY have the right to appeal the decision, although, the player will receive a two-game suspension as will the coach.
