The event was created by a collaboration of the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs, Queens Council on the Arts and the Department of Aging. The event is located at Selfhelp Innovative Senior Center, 45-25 Kissena Boulevard, Flushing, and will begin at 1pm. Celebrate the Greek Heritage with Saint Demetrios Annual Greek Festival. There will be food, music, games and a great time. The festival will go from Thursday, June 9, to Sunday, June 12, from 6 to 10 p.m. each day. The festival will be located at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 8435 152nd St., Jamaica . FRIDAY, JUNE 10 Take the kids to the Free Summer Reading Concert this Friday. The children will have a good time by listening to songs and watching puppet shows. Janice Buckner will also be in attendance to perform “Party to the Beat of Books.” The event will begin at 4 p.m. at Briarwood Community Library, 85-12 Main St., Briarwood. Honor the works of prolifi c composer and jazz legend John Birks Gillespie by attending “Dizzy Revisited” conducted by NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath. The event will be located at Flushing Town Hall, 137-35 Northern Blvd., Flushing, and will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets will cost $42 for non-members, $32 for members and $20 for students. Tickets can be bought online at www.fl ushingtownhall. org/events. The #1 90’s Alternative Rock Cover Band in NYC, Pipe will be playing live this Friday. Pipe is playing at The Other Place, 103-19 Metropolitan Ave, Forest Hills, NY 11375. The performance will begin at 10pm and will keep going until 1am. Admission is free. SATURDAY, JUNE 11 Welcome in Mika Tajima’s new temporary public art project, “Meridian (Gold)” this Saturday. The project will open up at 11 a.m. The event is free with no reservations necessary at LIC Landing, Hunter’s Point South Park, 52-10 Center Blvd. The event will include an artist talk with Mika Tajima, conversation with public process students and refreshments by Coffeed. Grab a friend and show off your barbecue skills at the NYFAC Foundation’s Smoke on the Water BBQ >JUNE Competition. There will be live music, carnival games, raffl e prizes and more. The event will begin at noon at The Thrivent Community - Tri-state & NYFAC Foundation, VFW Post 260 705 Shad Creek, Broad Channel. There is $25 entry fee per two-person team to enter the competition. Meet local historian, Stephen R. Barney Jr., at “The Barneys of Flushing Meadows” lecture and book signing this Saturday. Barney will go over his latest book which follows his family history back to Queens in the late 1700s. The event will take place at Douglaston/Little Neck Community Library, 249-01 Northern Blvd., Little Neck, and will go from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Admission is free but seating is on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis. Former curator of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Cranford Rose Garden, Sarah Owens, will share the culinary value of plants that can be found at the Queens Botanical Gardens.
