APRIL 11 - APRIL 17, 2013 25 A whole new Uncle Louie G’s Cutting the ribbon. BY LINDSEY ELLEFSON [email protected] Evans Kotsis has a lot on his plate, and it’s not just ice cream cake. Though he’s only owned the Uncle Louie G’s location at Third Avenue and 87th Street for two weeks, Kotsis has already done a lot for the store and has plans to do more. On April 3, the shop hosted a ribbon cutting to commemorate the new ownership and showcase all the changes in store. “The ribbon cutting went great,” Kotsis said. “We had so much support from everyone, including local officials, family and friends. There were so many people here to help us celebrate, it was wonderful.” Among those who attended the ceremony were Councilmember Vincent Gentile; Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis; State Senator Marty Golden; Carlo Scissura, the president of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce; and Borough President Marty Markowitz. Even Dino Russo, owner of the franchise, made an appearance! Kotsis is enthusiastic about the upcoming BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP/Photo by Lori Pedone summer season and what it means for business. Unlike any other Uncle Louie G’s, however, his location will be open year-round, will feature soups in the fall and will function as a “one-stop shop” for all dessert needs, including ice cream cakes, desserts and ice cream novelties. His personal recommendations for Italian ice flavors include cotton candy, honeydew and peanut butter, but Kotsis says he tries new flavors all the time and is constantly surprised by how different they are. “I was never that big on Italian ices before,” he explained. “I was an ice cream guy. But you’d be amazed at the crossover flavors. When you think of cake batter or mint chocolate chip, you think ice cream, but they taste amazing as ices!” Aside from all the delicious prospects behind the counter, Kotsis says there is one thing that makes him happier than any dessert. “I love to see a kid smile when I hand him or her a big ice cream,” he noted. “Actually, it’s great to see adults smile too. There’s something about a big banana split that brings us back to being kids again and it’s great.” Borough President Marty Markowitz presented a proclamation to store owner Evans Kotsis and family.
