Fifth Annual Dip Against Homelessness
BronxNet and Bronx-
Works will partner with The
Bronx Polar Bears for the
for The Fifth Annual Dip
Against Homelessness. The
event will take place on Saturday,
February 9 at Orchard
Beach.
The event will kick off at
11 a.m. with an offi cial welcome,
safety instructions
and warm-ups.
The big plunge into the
cold waters of the Long Island
Sound will take place at noon.
The team will include Bronx-
Works executive director Eileen
Torres, BronxNet executive
director Michael Max
Knobbe, friends and staff of
both organizations as well as
a few other special guests!
“For the fi fth year in a
row, we are thrilled to gather
with our community partners,
BronxNet and The
Bronx Polar Bears, to show
support for our most vulnerable
neighbors,” states Torres.
“Together, we will continue
to raise awareness of homelessness
in the Bronx at this
worthwhile annual event.”
“Pelham Bay Park is beautiful
all year, and it’s particularly
momentous when the
community comes together for
a good cause like the Bronx Polar
Bears Dip Against Homelessness
at Orchard Beach.
Our partnership with Bronx-
Works helps spotlight the issue,
while raising support for
homeless services and facilitating
the collection of warm
clothing items for those in
need. Even if the water is a
little too cold for you, you can
just come to support, enjoy
great music by the DJ collective
Uptown Vinyl Supreme,
and taste hot soup from Havana
Café,” said Knobbe.
All are invited to attend,
but registration is requested
to help raise money for services
provided by Bronx-
Works for the homeless population
of the Bronx. Each

Outreach Team (HOT)
makes thousands of contacts
with street homeless men and
women. Engagement is the
fi rst step in bringing about
change. A trip to the Bronx-
Works Living Room/Safe Haven
or a safe bed at a church
that collaborates with Bronx-
Works is a critical interim
step before BronxWorks helps
street homeless persons obtain
permanent housing.

BY MARY JANE MUSANO
I hope everyone is enjoying
the fi rst days of the new
year. Perhaps you are working
toward your goals for 2019
or maybe you are still in the
decision making process. Either
way, I hope you will consider
written goals for this
year. This is something that I
have done ever since I read that
Harvard did a study over many
years that proved that written
goals are much more likely to
be achieved especially if they
are posted visibly somewhere
in your home.
Our association has some
lofty goals for 2019 and we are
very excited as we begin to set
them in motion.
With the help and advice
of John Cerini, we will move
from a 402 Corporation to a
501-C3. This is extremely important
as it will allow us to
apply for grants from many organizations
as well as our local
politicians. Losing our senior
electeds has left us in a fi nancial
bind that will be alleviated
by doing this. We are already
considering some new and fun
events. So, stay tuned.
As you know, we do not
meet in January and February.
Our next membership meeting
will be on Tuesday, March
26 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran
Church. So many of you
have requested reminders before
each meeting and we have
tried to comply by sending post
cards. But sending post cards
is expensive so John will be
helping us with a new way to
remind you of upcoming meetings
and also of important
events. Hopefully, you will be
receiving a recorded phone
call as a reminder for our next
meeting. f for some reason
you do not want a phone call
reminder you may opt out at
any time, but we hope you will
be delighted with our new reminder
system.
If you have not sent in your
membership dues, please know
that it is now overdue. All dues
should be in by January. As you
know, your dues is now more
important than ever as we are
not as fi nancially secure as we
once were. We know that money
is tight for many of our members
as well which is why we
have strived to keep our membership
dues at just $10. Now is
an appropriate time to thank
our members that have sent
in their dues and send a very,
very big nod of appreciation to
those members that have sent
us more than the required $10.
Not only does this help fi nancially
but it says that you are
happy with the work we have
done. Knowing that you think
we are doing a good job is what
serves to keep us working hard
to make this community the
very best it can be. We cannot
do this without your support.
So, please be as involved as you
can be.
We, as board members of
our association, would like to
thank the many people that
support us. Pastor Lunow and
those at the First Lutheran
Church, have been instrumental
in our success. Their generosity
has been crucial in us
staying afl oat and working
hand in hand with them has
been our distinct pleasure.
Also, John Cerini, our Bronx
Tax Man, has generously provided
not only a large check just
when it was very much needed
but he is helping us bring our
association to a place where it
can not only survive but thrive.
So, thank you to them and also
to you for your much appreciated
support.
So, would you like to join a
group that is planning some
Christmas caroling for Christmas
2019? Yes, we are starting
early so if you are interested
call me and I will tell you all
about our plan for some holiday
fun.
You can reach me at (718)
792-6385 for information on
this project.
I will leave you with a Native
American Proverb. “We
will be known forever by the
tracks we leave.”
Please consider getting involved
so that together we may
take the steps necessary to
make our community a great
place for our children.
