The shovels came out -- literally -- on
Wednesday, March 27, as seven volunteer
groups were honored at the annual
Partnerships for Parks It’s My Park
Awards, recognizing groups for their exceptional
leadership and commitment to
their local parks through service, advocacy
and collaboration.
Five groups received the Golden
Trowel Award:
Bronx Sole of the Bronx, Parent Child
Relationship of Brooklyn, Muslim Volunteers
of New York of Manhattan, Kissena
Corridor Park Conservancy of Queens,
and Westerleigh Parks Coalition of
Staten Island.
Bronx group Jerome Park Friends and
Neighbors (FANS) won the Tim Tompkins
Leadership Award for serving as an
inspirational role model for New York City
park volunteers and demonstrating the
leadership and vision of Partnership for
Parks’ founder Tim Tompkins. Friends
of Mariners Harbor Parks of Staten Island
won the Rookie of the Year Award
for successfully leading their fi rst It’s My
Park project in 2018 and achieving crucial
developmental milestones.

The City Island Library will offer the
following programs:
Circle Time: Children from birth to 3
years old and their caregivers can enjoy
stories, songs, and fi nger plays while
spending time with other toddlers. Limit
of 15 children with their caregivers. Craft
included. Every Tuesday from 11 to 11:45
a.m.
Play-Doh Time: Have fun exploring
sensory dough as well as making your
own creations with Playdough by kneading,
rolling and molding it. Ages 2 to 5.
Playdough does contain wheat products.
Every Thursday at 11 a.m.
Read & Play: Children from birth to 3
years old and caregivers can take part
in wonderful stories, discover amazing
toys, and meet new friends in this fun, informal
program. Limit of 15 children with
their caregivers. Every Friday from 11 to
11:30 a.m.
Craft-A-Way: Drop in and participate
in creating projects related to a theme or
holiday. Ages 2 to 5. Friday, April 19 at
11:30 a.m.
The Manga Games: This workshop
will have participants create their own
characters with back stories and a universe
to fi ght in an unjust society’s arena.
We will also create a basic gaming system
using dice and a homemade scorecard
to determine winners. Monday, April
8, 3 p.m.
90s Throwback: See what life was like
back in the olden days - the 1990s! Each
Wednesday in April will feature either a
totally fl y hit movie from the 90s, or a 90s
craft that’s the bomb. Every Wednesday
at 3 p.m.
After School Lounge: Come to the library
after school for a chance to get a
head start on your homework before unwinding
online! Monday through Thursday
from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Friday Afternoon Activities: On Fridays,
at 3 p.m, a series of special activities
to celebrate the beginning of the
weekend will be held. April 5, Wii and
Board Games; April 12, Blackout Poetry;
April 19, Wii and Board Games; and April
26, How to Draw Basics.

Creative Aging: Finding Your Wisdom
Voice Poetry & Creative Writing Workshop:
In this 6 week workshop we look
at wisdom poetry & writings from ancient
times until now, and from around
the world, delving into universal truths.
Each writer will then explore these truths,
while learning how to write with their
own unique wisdom voice. Led by John
Maney, workshop leader certifi ed to lead
creative writing workshops with NY Writers
Coalition. Monday, April 8 and 15 at
1 p.m.
City Island Calligraphy: Calligraphy is
an ancient form of communication and
artistic expression that has since taken
on a wide variety of styles and functions.
Here at the City Island Library, patron
and volunteer Regina Sanglier will
teach you the basics, and hopefully get
you creating your very own works of art.
LIMIT: 10 participants. Saturday, April 13
and 27 at 10:30 a.m.
Mensa Mondays: Doing puzzles has
been linked to improved memory, better
problem-solving skills, and even lower
stress levels. Let us help you work off
those Monday blues by providing you
with riddles, crosswords, word searches,
and number puzzles to train your brain!
Every Monday from 11 to 6 p.m.
City Island Scrabble Club: If you’re
looking for some friendly competition,
then join our Scrabble Club! Come in
and fl ex your vocabulary muscles. Note:
Limited to 12 participants, registration required.

The Island Writers: This is a group for
all who are interested in writing professionally
or personally. All are welcome,

One-on-One: Computer, Tablet, and
Resume Instruction: Stop in, or call to
make an appointment for one hour of
personalized instruction that addresses
your questions and concerns. No computer?
No problem! Computers are available
for instructional use. Registration
required.
Saturday Afternoon Movies: Feature
movie titles, varying in length, at 1 p.m.
April 6, Alpha; April 13, Every Day; April
20, Crooked House; and April 27, Dangerous
Minds.

Stop by the PSS City Island Center,
located at 116 City Island Avenue,
Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. Experience their exercise classes
from gentle yoga stretch, balance class,
arthritis workshop and tai chi as well as
the fi t for life and cardio fi t. They also offer
acrylic painting, calligraphy, canasta,
health presentations, singing group, and
parties. Lunch is served from noon to 1
p.m., suggested donation $2. The center
participants go on shopping trips
every day; i.e. Shop Rite, Dollar Tree,
Target, Kmart ,as well as theatre excursions,
boat trips, special luncheons and
more. It’s free to become a member
but you must be 60 years or above. For

services are available to seniors
Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
in community districts 9, 10, 11 and 12.
The program provides door-to-door service
for all medical appointments. Their
drivers are courteous and professional;
and their vehicles are clean and handicap
accessible, including wheelchair
lifts.

At a time when other banks are shuttering
their locations, Ridgewood Savings

amenities, and a community meeting
space at its Glendale branch to better
serve the community. The new enhanced
Glendale branch location will be
unveiled to the public in early summer,
Ridgewood Savings Bank president,
CEO, and chairman Leonard Stekol, announced
recently.
According to Stekol, Ridgewood is
modernizing its storefront space and
lobby to be more open and consumer
friendly; and adding a new community
meeting room – complete with wheelchair
access – that will be available to
not-for-profi ts, civic organizations, and
community groups for use.

and expanding its presence on Long
