La Bella Torte Dessert Truck
www.labellatortetruck.nyc
Husband and wife team Joe and AnnMarie
Glaser founded their food truck business
when the economy crashed in 2008. With
pluck and determination, Joe and AnnMarie
left their long careers in plumbing and
advertising and went to culinary school. Now
they travel all over Brooklyn selling handmade
pizzas, panini, cannoli and other incredible,
simple Italian treats.
SPREAD
ALC Italian Grocery
www.alcitaliangrocery.com
Louis Coluccio Jr., born into an Italian family
that ran a specialty food store, learned from
the beginning how to serve the community. In
2012 he opened his own store in Bay Ridge,
the ALC Italian Grocery, as a way to preserve
a kind of community staple that seems to
be fading from our city. Stop by to pick up
groceries, stay for an espresso or a sandwich
and to get to know your neighbors.
DUB Pies
www.dubpies.com
A lot of people have tried and failed to make
a go of Australian meat pies here in the city.
But only one shop’s held on to the market ever
since it introduced the antipodean treat to the
city in 2003. The Down-Under Bakery (DUB)
Pies is the original go-to for fair dinkum
savory and sweet pastries. Visit them at their
Brooklyn Cafe or fi nd their truck. They even
deliver pies to other states. Mum’d be proud.
A&E Supply Co.
www.aesupplyco.com
A&E Supply Co. is a little bit of everything
— and they do it well. They’ve got a coff ee
counter to rival any local cafe. There’s an
on-site butcher off ering grass fed and grass
fi nished beef, pasture raised meats, artisanal
charcuterie and farmstead cheeses (and
custom orders if you call in advance!). The
bar just opened and soon dinner service will
be available. You could feasibly spend all day
here – and we wouldn’t blame you.
EJEN
www.ejenfoods.com
EJEN is Korean comfort food beautifully
plated and incredibly rich and fi lling. You
won't fi nd it in a restaurant, though. They
bring their goods to various bars and venues
like Sycamore, the Kings County Brewers
Collective and the Rockaway Brewing
Company. One bite of their pork & veggie
meatballs or their bulgogi and you'll be
following them around like Phish fans after a
reunion.
Luke's Lobster
www.lukeslobster.com
You might have caught a peek of Brooklynites
enjoying lobster rolls at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Those delicious, irresistible snacks come from
the Luke's Lobster shack at the entrance.
They've got tons of other seafood snacks, too,
which are best enjoyed sitting on the shore
and watching New York harbor from afar. And
it's all guilt-free, since Luke's is committed to
sustainable fi shing to preserve both wildlife
and the independent fi shermen who rely on it.
Mike’s Deli
www.mikesdelibrooklyn.com
Mike’s Deli in Bay Ridge has that old Brooklyn
charm that you don’t see often enough
anymore. The awning, the mom and pop feel
and the giant menu with everything from
breakfast sandwiches to rice pudding evoke
a time when eating out meant getting really
good, no-frills food at a great price. Plus,
they’ve been voted «Best Delicatessen in
Brooklyn 2016.»
Xin Restaurant and Bar
www.facebook.com/xinbayridge
Xin isn’t your regular corner Chinese
restaurant. It is a Bay Ridge fi ne dining
experience with delicious dishes like
Mongolian Beef Cubes, Gold Coin Filet
Mignon, the Xin Lobster Wok and specialty
cocktails to pair with them. It’s the perfect
date spot or a place to treat your friends.
Peaches Hothouse
www.bcrestaurantgroup.compeaches
The Peaches Hothouse menu is simple, but
special. This «country cafe» in the heart of
Bed-Stuy has a great selection of Southern
eats like the House Smoked Sausage
sandwich, the Full Jim Cade (a burger with
fried green tomato, onions and bacon),
blackened catfi sh and all your favorite sides
like collard greens, creamy grits and more.
Try the Nashville Style Hot Chicken, but be
careful. Only the strong survive the extra-hot
sauce.
Buttermilk Bakeshop
www.buttermilkbakeshop.com
Just the name Buttermilk evokes the rich
fl avor of homemade baked goods. They
have any kind of sweet you can imagine,
like warm chocolate chip cookies, salted
caramels, cupcakes and pies. Pastry chef Katie
Rosenhouse has trained for years to produce
goods this, well, good. They even off er
classes if you want to bring some of the sweet
goodness to your own kitchen.
Donut Plant
www.dougnutplant.com
It’s easy to roll your eyes when you hear of
an artisanal doughnut shop in New York,
but Doughnut Plant has the bona fi des most
others don’t. Mark Israel, a third-generation
baker, founded the bakery in 1994 with his
grandfather’s doughnut recipe. He has been
slowly growing his business from a one-man
basement operation to a wildly popular shop
with traditional fl avors and funky treats like
avocado and potato doughnuts. Stop on by for
new specialties appearing all the time.
Midnights
www.midnightsbk.com
Midnights is a trendy, chic restaurant and
bar without all pretension those words imply.
Chef Joshua Cormier has created a menu with
uncommon dishes, such as Thai red curry
bouchot mussels and lamb fettuccine, as well
as some classics such as sea bass and roasted
chicken — all with a fi ne dining twist. The
prices are reasonable for the quality you’re
getting, especially on the late-night happy
hour menu. This is the kind of change in
Williamsburg we like to see.
BREWERIES
Braven
www.bravenbrewing.com
Braven takes its name from two animals, as
described in their slogan: «Bold like a buck
& crafty like a raven.» They’ve got that sort
of hip, edgy vibe that’s grown in Brooklyn in
recent years. And no wonder, they are located
in Bushwick and partner with independent
Brooklyn arts institutions. The beer is simple
but excellent. And their Instagram feed is sick.
Six Point
www.sixpoint.com
Sixpoint Brewery is Red Hook’s answer to the
craft beer question. Shipped in the unique
skinny cans and adorned with the iconic sixpointed
star, Sixpoint beer is unmistakable.
And it’s sure to pack a wallop, whether it’s
high IBUs (that’s bitterness to us lay folk),
high ABV or just crazy delicious concoctions
like 5Beans, a porter fl avored with cocoa,
vanilla, coff ee and cardamom.
Kelso
www.kelsobeer.com
Brewer Kelly Taylor and his wife Sonya
Giacobbe lend their names to Kelso Beer, a
local gem founded in 2006. Taylor has brewed
beer since the early ‘90s and now produces a
small line of light, refreshing ales and lagers,
as well as some excellent German- and Belgianstyle
seasonals, which you’ll only fi nd here.
