The 371-bed hospital transitioned on February 25 to the new Epic electronic medical record that seamlessly connects the hospital, emergency room, and robust primary and specialty outpatient services into one unifi ed electronic information system. “This technology of the future is all about patient-centered care,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island CEO Anthony Rajkumar. “With our sta working together in one system, we’ll be able to advance quality of care and provide a better experience for our patients for many more decades to come.” More than 2,000 health care providers have been trained to use the new technology, which features: *MyChart, the patient portal that puts patients’ medical history at their fi ngertips. Patients can manage their health online by using a smartphone, tablet or laptop to view medical test results, request prescription reills, send messages to the care team and access appointment information. *Sophisticated decision-support tools that equip providers with alerts to prevent medication errors, avoid duplicative and unnecessary tests, and keep patients preventive health screenings on schedule. “I am excited about the opportunities for communication between the patient and care team members through My- Chart,” said Dr. Lana Vardanian, chair of ambulatory care. “Overall it is going to improve patient care on many levels.” As one of the top companies in the health information technology industry, Epic is recognized as having the “Best in KLAS” system by the acknowledged industry monitor. The advanced system has been adopted by several other leading hospitals and health care systems in the nation, including the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, NYU Langone and Kaiser Permanente. “EPIC is causing a movement at Coney Island, a culture of improvement,” said Jonathan Nover, RN, director of nursing, Emergency Department. “The report capabilities, management tools and data seem unlimited. In a year, we will look back and see how far we have come.” NYC Health + Hospitals is undergoing one of the largest Epic implementations in the country that will ultimately unify 40,000 users in more than 70 patient care sites.
