Photos courtesy of Jude Vasya needs crucial surgery. Two years ago he started to breathe heavily and we took him to the vet. The x-ray showed he was suffering from a collapsed lung. I thought that was more than enough for an innocent animal to go through, but as fate would have it, a week ago I saw a small scratch above his eye. “I hoped it was a just a scratch. But suddenly it grew into a bump. We trapped him and brought him immediately to the vet. The doctor said what we feared the worst — it is a tumor, which has to be removed. “The surgery is in two days, then Vasya will stay in the clinic for four to five days to recover. Please, find it in your heart to save an innocent soul and help alleviate what is bound to be an enormous medical bill. Any bit of course helps. Every dollar counts. Thank you so much in advance. “Thank you, Jude, for your attention and help.” — Laura Kolchinsky Fundraiser: www. youcaring.com/vasyathecat 777919; PayPal: laurathewinner@gmail. com. *** “Autumn and Spring are bonded siblings who are about five months old. They are fixed, tested and Lassow vaccinated. “Autumn is a beautiful spotted silver/ebony tabby little girl with the smallest little face and big golden eyes. Spring is an exquisite solid ebony kitten with a lean body and large paws that make it easy for her to grab any cat toy. “When it is playtime, Spring springs into action, running around for hours enjoying her exercise period. Autumn joins during playtime, especially if her favorite toy is used — like the laser light pointer. “Autumn and Spring are very entertaining and funny. To adopt Autumn and Spring, a completed application form is required; an adoption fee and hard cat carrier are requested. Contact us at maryab04@ gmail.com.” *** ADOPTION UPDATE: Carlos De Leon's story about Casper, the white cat listed in the November 2016 newspaper. "I wasn't sure I wanted to adopt Casper for I had adopted two other cats and I live alone in Long Island, but every now and then I would think lovingly about Casper. “Casper is an awesome sweet cat; she changed my life. We are very bonded and in tune with each other's feelings. “She enjoys eating her food and treats, and loves to run around the house like a dog. Her favorite sleeping spot is on the sofa near the fireplace. Casper is extremely curious and super smart. Overall, Casper enjoys her life, and I enjoy my life with Casper." The laudatory session will take place on Wednesday, June 11, at 7 p.m., at P.S./I.S. 30, 7001 Fourth Avenue. It will also be an opportunity for parents from other schools to see the interior of the district's newest school that was built on the former site of the Bay Ridge United Methodist Church aka the Green Church). * * * What an absolute terrific turnout for the street co-naming ceremonies in honor of the late, great Tom Kane. The block that Kane grew up on 88th street near Colonial Road was formally dedicated Tom Kane Way and was even blessed by Reverend Gerard Sauer, the pastor of St. Mel's Church, a former associate pastor at Bay Ridge's St. Patrick's Church and a personal friend. A host of dignitaries were on hand to join Kane's family, friends and associates on this auspicious occasion. City Councilmember Vinnie Gentile -- who ensured the full Council approved the co-naming, wrote in the program, "A lifelong Bay Ridge resident, Tom's tremendous contributions and achievements left an indelible mark on the community he loved so much." Close friend Frankie Marra sang and played "Forever Young" by Bob Dylan. Kane was a big, big Dylan fan! * * * Among the marching groups in the recent 147th annual Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade was the Society of Old Brookynites. The civic organization has been marching in every Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade since its founding in 1880. Its fi rst march was led by former Brooklyn Mayor John Ward Hunter, and the 2014 march was led by Society President and Brooklyn historian Ronald Schweiger. On Sunday, June 22, at 12:30 p.m., the society will be celebrating its 134th anniversary at the Bay Ridge Manor, 476 76th Street. The keynoter for the occasion will be society member and New York State Supreme Court Justice Arthur Schack who will be talking about the history of the Boy Scouts, prominent Eagle Scouts, and since he was a former attorney for Major League Baseball, a few hits, runs and strikes. Also on the program will be former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz discussing his new role as vice president of borough promotion and engagement for NYC and Co. The event is open to the public. Reservations are only $46 which includes a full sit-down dinner. This year, he was joined by 75 high school and grade school volunteers. Greene continues to press efforts to establish a Marine Environmental Science Lab at the site. He is also currently a professor at Kingsborough College. Maria Makrinos, the new president of the Fort Hamilton High School Alumni Association, stopped, by bringing free doughnuts for all the volunteers. * * * The Kings County Republican Party is holding its 2014 Lincoln Day Reception and Dinner on Sunday, June 22, from noon to 3 p.m., at Gargiulo’s in Coney Island. Among the honored guests will be Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, the state GOP’s At its March monthly meeting, the Ragamuffin Parade organization voted to designate Monsignor Kevin Noone, the pastor of Our Lady of Angels Church, at 74th Street and Fourth Avenue, as the 2017 grand marshal for the group's 51st annual parade on Saturday, October 14. The parade committee also elected Vietnam U.S. Air Force veteran Ray Aalbue as Ragamuffin "Man of the Year," and he will also join Monsignor Noone at the head of the parade. Aalbue is the current president of the United Military Veterans of Kings County, and executive director of Brooklyn’s 150th annual Kings County Memorial Day Parade, to be held in Bay Ridge on May 29. According to Arlene Keating, the new president of the Ragamuffin Parade Committee, it’s very appropriate to have the pastor of Our Lady of Angels as grand marshal, since it was at his parish that the parade was founded over five decades ago. This past September, the city agreed to co-name the northeast corner of Third Avenue and 74th Street as "Ragamuffin Way." * * * On Sunday, March 19, the 42nd annual Brooklyn St. Patrick's Day Parade sponsored by the Brooklyn Irish American Parade Committee took place along Seventh Avenue and Prospect Park West in Park Slope. James Houlihan, owner of the famed Farrell's Bar and Grill, was the grand marshal. This coming Sunday, it will be Bay Ridge's turn to celebrate Irish heritage when the community's 24th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade is held along Third Avenue from Marine Avenue to 67th Street, starting at 1 p.m. Among the musical contingents will be Brooklyn's largest and award-winning marching band from Fort Hamilton High School, which just returned from Orlando, Florida where members marched in a parade at Universal Studios Amusement Park, and competed against other high schools in a music tournament, winning top honors. Monsignor Kieran Harrington, communications vicar for the Brooklyn Catholic Diocese, is the 2017 grand marshal.
