22 APRIL 28 – MAY 4, 2017 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP Go camping without going far at Floyd Bennett Field BY MCGEORGE SORENSEN When it comes to the great outdoors, Brooklyn families don’t have to look very far to find the perfect place to enjoy a natural environment by the sea. Floyd Bennett Field, which is part of the National Park Service’s (NPS) Gateway National Recreational Area, has a wondrous campground located on Jamaica Bay, allowing kids of all ages the opportunity to explore the natural setting by foot, bike or even kayak. The Floyd Bennett Field campgrounds offer 32 tent sites and nine recreational vehicle (RV) parking areas. Up to six people can stay at a single site, which can accommodate one large tent or two small tents; larger families and groups will need to reserve multiple camp sites. The NPS does not provide tents or sleeping bags, so all campers will need to bring their own. Each camp site features a picnic table, a charcoal grill and a fire ring. You won’t need to worry about hygiene, as there are restrooms and showers nearby (the showers are open daily, May through October, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.). There’s also a camp store with various supplies and provisions available. Glass containers, alcoholic beverages and portable charcoal grills are not permitted on the camp grounds. Campers, with their permits, will have access to an array of activities on Floyd Bennett Field, including multiple fishing areas. Bring your own bike to explore the field’s many walking or biking paths; or your kayak to explore the bay. You can also practice your archery skills at the Floyd Bennett Field Archery Range, which features 8 to 10 targets and a covered shooting platform. Rates at Floyd Bennett Field are $30 per night or $210 per week. Discounts are available for seniors. To find out more, visit www.nps.gov/ gate/planyourvisit/events.htm.
