but in the end, the swift and
orderly completion of special counsel
Robert Mueller’s Russia probe will
be the only thing that will put to rest
the questions raised even before Mr.
Trump took office.
The details of the book will not
substitute for testimony and evidence.
Republicans like
Representative Matt Gaetz would
like to make the book the issue but that
is just more misdirection.
As a former FBI employee, Mr. Comey’s

of this mess and Mr. Trump to give

his Twitter account a rest.
America is like a living being. It changes and remakes itself, and
reshapes the world by example. The
example set by the White House needs
to be improved. This White House and
the reality of social media politics
make it possible that good ideas are
discredited before even being given
a chance when it is politically
expedient.
Locally, a Democratic candidate for
State Senate Andrew Gounardes is advocating
good ideas for stronger gun
laws to prevent gun violence. Stronger
gun laws don’t mean taking guns away
from gun owners; rather, they can be
about keeping guns away from people
who should not have them.
Mr. Gounardes supports improved
laws to extend background check
times from three days to 10, to prohibit
persons convicted of a hate crime from
purchasing firearms and to suspend,
temporarily, possession of firearms
by people experiencing clinically
established mental issues as well as a
ban on “bump” stocks.
Why State Senator Marty Golden
refuses to advocate for simple and
WE THE
PEOPLE
BY BRIAN KERIN
WE THE PEOPLE
BY BRIAN KERIN
straightforward measures that would
keep our children safe in schools and
our citizens safe on the streets is beyond
comprehension.
Mr. Golden advocates changes that
would make schools more like jails.
He stated, “Smart scanners and law
enforcement in every school will go
a long way in giving parents and students
peace of mind.”
Should we adopt difficult and complicated
measures when simpler ones
exist? Why address an issue that is
created by a small minority of mentally
deranged individuals who have
access to firearms by burdening every
student in every school every day?
Students around the nation are
leading a movement for change in
gun laws and are seeing results. Traditional
gun rights states have enacted
sensible changes to their gun laws to
make it more difficult for immature,
unstable or undeserving persons to

obtain firearms.
Sometimes a small group of dedicated
people can speak up and be heard.
It is time for the old guard to allow
new ideas and fresh energy address
the problems that they have failed to
address.
The paid lobbyists and entrenched
career politician will not deliver what
we the people need if they have failed
to do so by now.
In the world that we live in, we feel
overwhelmed, but we must remember
that working as one we can accomplish
great things. The first step is to
believe.
Safety with fairness under the law
is a good thing. Believe in it. We must
insist that our representatives put the
safety of the people first and allegiance
to groups that provide campaign
contributions second or elect new
representatives to work for safety and
not for vested interests. It’s the people
who matter not the guns, the ideology,
the NRA or the corporations.

Blasio is really not serious about
following through on his campaign
promises to assure the NYPD scrupulously honors
individual citizens civil rights.
He stated that the “new administration promised
change but instead we get more of the same.”
That is not true. The number of arrests for low-level
marijuana possession
has dropped and NYPD
policy is not to force a
suspect to display small
amounts of pot in order
to make an arrest.
Governor Cuomo has
proposed decriminalizing
possession of 15
grams or less of pot whether hidden or in plain view,
which would take this controversy and its attendant
political baggage off the table. It would be nice to let
police offi cers perform their duties instead of being
pawns in a political chess game.
Mayor de Blasio has fulfi lled an incredible amount
of his promises in a very short time. He has imposed
the extra protection of an inspector general for the
NYPD and signed off on the laws passed by the City
Council which may leave police offi cers subject to
lawsuits for negligent performance of their duties.
He has provided universal pre K without a tax
increase. He is settling the outstanding municipal
worker contracts neglected by Mike Bloomberg for
the next mayor to handle. He is championing Vision
Zero to reduce traffi c fatalities to zero. It is unfair
to question his commitment to his ideals or to the
fulfi llment of his promises.
The City Council will pass 11 laws and four resolutions
to create a Vision Zero environment for our
streets. The new laws provide a lower speed limit for
city streets and enhanced penalties for reckless drivers.
The state legislature must approve the changes.
We also need the state legislature to provide a
reasonable number of speed cameras to enforce the
new laws. Let us hope that our legislators will work
together as a group to see that these changes and
improvements are made quickly.

We are seeing more and more homes in Dyker
Heights enclosed in stainless steel bars on all
fl oors and heavy stainless steel security doors.
I fi nd this trend extremely disturbing. The community
remains as safe as ever. The new protections
seem to appear only on recently purchased
homes and refl ect a different cultural view on
security. Homes like this have existed in great
numbers in the Sunset Park area for many
years and are really not positive additions to
any community.
The homes themselves look horrible and,
worse yet, they make the whole area around
them appear trashy. And, frankly, instead of offering
additional security protection, they more
than likely attract unwanted attention from potential
burglars who fi gure these homes contain
the greatest number of valuables.
Community outreach by civic and government
groups as well as elected offi cials explaining
the disadvantages of the heavy security from
both an aesthetic as well as security perspective
is necessary, or we will be confronted with large
sections of our community looking like safety
deposit box holding cells.

We need Mr. Mueller to get to
the bottom of this mess and Mr.

a rest.
The response by the United
States, Great Britain and France
should in the long term save lives.
CROSSING THE RED LINE
I strongly support the actions of
the United States, Great Britain
and France in launching a one-day
attack on selected Syrian chemical
warfare production and storage sites.
The emergence of chemical warfare
in any situation represents an escalation
that threatens not only the Syrian
people but the citizens of the world in
general. In fact, chemical weapons
have been banned by mutual agreement
of the super powers for decades.
Of course, any war is something that
at all costs should be avoided. Chemical
warfare, like carpet bombing of civilian
targets or the use of landmines
that remain long after hostilities have
ceased, kills many innocents.
The horrifying pictures of dead Syrian
children and others with oxygen
masks in use is a sad reminder that the
Syrian civil war is more than a proxy
war for Middle Eastern countries,
Russia and its allies. It is a war with
real people suffering and dying.
The response by the United States,
Great Britain and France should in
the long term save lives. This is especially
true when you combine our
actions with statements by the Defense
Department, White House and our
U.N. representative that we are ready
to take action again if these chemical
attacks do not come to an end.
* * *
The Russian government’s U.N. Security
Council vote to veto a resolution
denouncing the chemical attack and
in support of the response should
be another reminder that present
day Russia led by former KGB Chief
Vladimir Putin is no better than the
old communist Soviet Union.
Of course, considering its interference
in the presidential election and
attempted murder in London of a former
spy and his daughter, this should
come as no surprise to anyone.
It seems these days we rarely declare
any nation, regardless of actions,
an enemy of the United States. I would
suggest by its activities and rhetoric
Russia should be considered one.

Board of Elections petition filings
are truly mundane happenings that
I would assume interest very few
members of the public. Yet, they are
a serious business covered by many
laws with violations even reaching up
to a criminal level.
That is exactly what Frank Marano,
the Staten Island chairperson of the
Reform Party — which has endorsed
Congressmember Dan Donovan — is
alleging the campaign of Michael
Grimm attempted against his party.
As reported on NY1 and in legal
filings as well as in submissions to
several district attorneys and the U.S.
attorney, Marano is alleging that the
Grimm campaign submitted “poison
pill” petitions designed to cause the
Board of Elections as a matter of following
its rules to knock Donovan off
the Reform Party line.
Essentially, the Reform Party is
alleging that on Monday, April 10,
it submitted a sufficient number of
qualifying petition signatures for Dan
Donovan in compliance with the election
law and the rules and regulations
of the Board of Elections.
Later in the week, an additional petition
page was filed with the Board
of Elections that could be in its view
clearly linked to the Grimm campaign
that would cause the original
petition to be out of compliance and
subject to invalidation by the Board
of Elections.
Many might consider this inside
ball. I would simply say, having been
involved in party politics for 40 years,
that I have never seen anything like
this happen in the past.
Without claiming to know who is
behind this stunt, it strongly appears
that someone was out to sabotage the
Reform Party endorsement of Donovan.
Potentially disenfranchising a
political party and by extension its
members and those wishing to vote
on that line is serious business.
