INNOVATION LAB MARKS FIRST ANNIVERSARY Brooklynite Darryle Hawes was looking for a permanent job, and after visiting Innovation Lab at Industry City, he got just what he was looking for. Darryle now works as a machine expert at Modo, a company based at Industry City that designs and manufactures optical frames and sunglasses, and is one of more than 1,000 area residents served by Innovation Lab since it opened a year ago. A partnership that includes Industry City, CUNY City Tech, and local non-profits: Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation, Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow, and Brooklyn Workforce Innovations launched Innovation Lab a year ago to provide area residents with access to good-paying jobs and economic opportunities in the city’s technology, creative, and manufacturing sectors. “I was thinking about my son going to pre-school and was trying to figure out where the next freelance job was coming from,” said Darryle Hawes. “Right at that time, I got the call from Industry City’s Innovation Lab: I got the job.” Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, Council Member Carlos Menchaca, and Assistant Assembly Speaker Felix Ortiz supported the effort by providing funds to some of the non-profit organizations involved in the programming. “We’ve made incredible progress over the last year, but this is just the beginning,” said Cristal Rivera, director of community engagement at Industry City. “Over the next year, we will increase staff focused on workforce development and outreach and expand service offerings. There’s so much more opportunity to be captured here.” VISIT: Industry City, 87 35th Street 2nd Floor, Sunset Park HOURS: M-F, 9:00AM-5:00PM PHONE: (718) 801-8970 EMAIL: [email protected] MORE INFO: www.industrycity.com/innovation-lab INNOVATION LAB: By the Numbers 1 1,000+ YEAR PEOPLE ASSISTED 103 PEOPLE PLACED IN JOBS 80% from South Brooklyn 65% from Sunset Park 200 LOCAL YOUTH CONNECTED TO INTERNSHIPS 225 LOCAL BUSINESSES SERVED BROOKLYN’S LEADER IN CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING 50¢ WE’RE ALL ABOUT YOU VOLUME 88 NUMBER 21 ● MAY 26, 2017 JUNE 1, 2017 The Brooklyn Spectator (USPS 067100), published weekly by Brooklyn Media Group, Inc.
