We tagged along for the grand procession that passed throughout the cemetery and by candlelit graves of fallen soldiers from both sides of the conflict. As we trekked through the pathways, there were uniformed re-enactors -- soldiers standing guard, musicians and singers performing Civil War songs. The event drew thousands of relatives, Civil War buffs, amateur historians and genealogists, local residents and hundreds of out-oftowners. The block that Kane grew up on 88th street near Colonial Road was formally dedicated Tom Kane Way and was even blessed by Reverend Gerard Sauer, the pastor of St. Mel's Church, a former associate pastor at Bay Ridge's St. Patrick's Church and a personal friend. A host of dignitaries were on hand to join Kane's family, friends and associates on this auspicious occasion. City Councilmember Vinnie Gentile -- who ensured the full Council approved the co-naming, wrote in the program, "A lifelong Bay Ridge resident, Tom's tremendous contributions and achievements left an indelible mark on the community he loved so much." Kane was a big, big Dylan fan! * * * Among the marching groups in the recent 147th annual Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade was the Society of Old Brookynites. The civic organization has been marching in every Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade since its founding in 1880. Its fi rst march was led by former Brooklyn Mayor John Ward Hunter, and the 2014 march was led by Society President and Brooklyn historian Ronald Schweiger. On Sunday, June 22, at 12:30 p.m., the society will be celebrating its 134th anniversary at the Bay Ridge Manor, 476 76th Street. The keynoter for the occasion will be society member and New York State Supreme Court Justice Arthur Schack who will be talking about the history of the Boy Scouts, prominent Eagle Scouts, and since he was a former attorney for Major League Baseball, a few hits, runs and strikes. Also on the program will be former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz discussing his new role as vice president of borough promotion and engagement for NYC and Co. This year, he was joined by 75 high school and grade school volunteers. Greene continues to press efforts to establish a Marine Environmental Science Lab at the site. He is also currently a professor at Kingsborough College. Maria Makrinos, the new president of the Fort Hamilton High School Alumni Association, stopped, by bringing free doughnuts for all the volunteers. * * * The Kings County Republican Party is holding its 2014 Lincoln Day Reception and This coming Monday, May 29, Brooklyn's Sesquicentennial Kings County Memorial Day Parade, one of the oldest continuous Memorial Day parades in the nation, will take place starting at 11 a.m. along Third Avenue from 78th Street to Marine Avenue then along Fourth Avenue to 101st Street at John Paul Jones Park (aka "Cannonball Park"). This year, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) has been designated lead veterans' group and the reviewing officer will be Colonel Peter Sicoli, U.S. Army garrison commander at Fort Hamilton. Each year, the boroughwide parade is sponsored by the United Military Veterans of Kings County (UMVKC) under the leadership of U.S. Air Force veteran and Bay Ridge resident Ray Aalbue, its chair, who previously served as public affairs officer for Fort Hamilton. The parade was first held when Brooklyn was an independent city, then the third largest in the country. The 2017 grand marshals are Lieutenant General John A. Toolan, Jr., U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.), a Brooklyn native, and Prisco DeAngelis, a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and longtime president of UMVKC. Deputy Grand Marshals are World War II veterans and brothers Roy and Jack Vanasco; and New York City Deputy Council Leader Vincent Gentile, who chairs the Council's Committee on Public Safety and is a 2010 Patriotism Award recipient. In addition to marching bands, a band from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and U.S. Air Force Ceremonial Honor Guard from Washington, D.C., there will be eight floats and vintage military vehicles and antique cars. Immediately following the parade a memorial service inside John Paul Jones Park featuring America's famous tenor, former 68th Precinct NYPD Officer Danny Rodriguez singing the national anthem and "God Bless America," will take place. The program will also include wreath layings and a 21-cannon salute by the Veteran Corps of Artillery resplendent in their War of 1812-era dress uniforms.
