On October 17, students in the preschool through kindergarten classes at the Lutheran Elementary School of Bay Ridge celebrated autumn in their very own pumpkin patch. Veteran kindergarten teacher Linda Schaefer surprised her students as the day’s scarecrow. Other fall events at Lutheran Elementary School included a breast cancer fundraising day. Students and faculty came to school dressed in shades of pink and red to support the school’s fundraising efforts on behalf of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The dress-down day, bake sale and other activities raised $2,200 for the cause. *** On November 3, the Bay Ridge Prep community gathered outside the school’s 74th Street building to show support for six faculty members who were among the runners completing the NYC Marathon. At mile four of the marathon, Dr. Michael Dealy, Mr. Erik Fezzuoglio, Mr. Chris Flanigan, Ms. Kate George, Ms. Lisa Neesemann and Ms. Kimi Wright were greeted by the music of the High School Band and a street full of Bay Ridge Prep students, staff, families and alumni sending out cheers and highfives. *** Angela Cerulli, a junior at Fontbonne Hall Academy, has been named a Youth Service Advocate by the New York State Bar Association. The Youth Service Advocate designation is reserved for exceptional young people who have given their time to law-related volunteer service. Angela was recognized for her dedication to her community through her “No Texting While Driving” campaign and her work at Councilmember Vincent Gentile’s office. *** Congratulations to the Fontbonne Hall Academy Speech Team on its impressive performance at the speech competition held at the Mary Louis Academy on October 26. Caroline D’Emic (‘14) won first place in Dramatic Interpretation, and Ugonna Nwabueze (‘14) won second place in Dramatic Interpretation. Samantha Fernandes (‘17) and Janet Molinari (‘14) took second place in Duo Interpretation, and Alessandra Maldonado (‘15) and Jessica Martino (‘15) took third place in Duo Interpretation. Shania Shehata (‘16) placed third in Declamation. Jill Corozzo (‘16) won fourth place in Junior Varsity Oral Interpretation, and Rebecca Rivera (‘15) won seventh place in Varsity Oral Interpretation. *** Not even the threat of rain could dampen the spirits of the members of the Bishop Kearney High School community as they traveled to the start of the 22nd Annual Walkathon along Shore Road on October 11. Faculty and students raised over $60,000. Some of the funds will be used to provide additional technological and educational resources for the students. *** Saint Saviour High School hosted its annual Walkathon on September 28. Over the course of six weeks, students raised over $30,000 to help pay for 250 new lockers, which were installed over the summer. The entire student body, faculty and a number of parents participated by walking or cheering along the four-mile route in Prospect Park. The Michael Gordon Foundation has awarded scholarships totaling $25,000 to 11 freshmen at Bishop Kearney High School this year. Dr. Margaret Minson, Kearney’s president, presented the awards in recognition of the scholastic achievement and academic promise of these young women. The recipients are pictured after the ceremony with members of Kearney’s administration. Seated, left to right are Lucille Spata; Annebelle Phanor; Dr. Margaret Minson, president; Mrs. Elizabeth Guglielmo, Kearney’s principal; and Ayana Bridgemen. Standing, left to right are Nydia Beckles, Jenna Gonzalez, Christina Tadros, Eynique Waterman, Kristen Coughlin, Maria Doubov and Marla Perez. Ayesha Phillips is not pictured. The Foreign Language Department and the entire Kearney community celebrated Italian Culture Month in October. This year’s theme was Italian creativity. Language teachers Mrs. Maria Giarracca and Mrs. Maryanne Maffei had students write about famous Italian inventions that revolutionized the world. Members of Kearney’s Italian Club coordinated with the cafeteria staff to prepare an Italian-inspired lunch of pizza, pasta and zeppole for dessert! Recently, Bishop Kearney High School hosted over 85 colleges and universities at this year’s college fair. More than 100 Kearney students and families had the opportunity to meet with admissions representatives in preparation for the college application process. The fair was organized by the College Counseling Center, and it afforded juniors and seniors an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the various higher education institutions in the Northeast. In attendance were several schools that boast a long list of Kearney graduates, including Fordham University, Fairfield University, Manhattan College, St. Joseph’s University and St. Peter’s University. *** St. Edmund Prep High School students recently took a trip to Federal Hall in New York City to participate in the James Otis Lecture program commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Stamp Act Congress. This was a wonderful educational opportunity for Prep students who are members of the prestigious and rigorous IB (International Baccalaureate) History of the Americas class. Mr. O’Donnell, IB teacher, and Mrs. McGinnis, assistant principal of academics and IB teacher, also attended the lecture. *** It is with great excitement that Fontbonne Hall Academy announces the creation of a new Junior Class retreat program called “Who is my neighbor?” The program is rooted in one of the pillars of the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph -- the expression of love for our neighbor. This unique retreat opportunity will offer Fontbonne juniors a point of access to the lives and stories of their neighbors right here in Brooklyn. Every Friday, six members of the Junior Class, along with a faculty member, will spend the day volunteering at CHiPS (Park Slope Christian Help, Inc.), a soup kitchen that prepares meals for the needy. In addition to meals, the organization offers seasonal clothing, emergency pantry items and shelter for young mothers and their children. FRIENDS, the National Association of Young People Who Stutter, is an organization that provides a network of support and education for children and teenagers who stutter, their families, and the professionals who work with them. FRIENDS is a nonprofit, volunteer organization directed by Lee Caggiano, a mother with a son who stutters and a speech-language pathologist specializing in stuttering. FRIENDS was founded in 1997 by John Ahlbach, an adult who stutters, and Ms. Caggiano to address the lack of services and support available to young people who stutter and their families. To provide education and support, FRIENDS publishes a newsletter that includes information and reflections on the stuttering experience. The organization holds an annual three-day convention and several regional one-day conferences throughout the year that provide experiences that can change negative feelings about stuttering into positive ones. The FRIENDS Stepping Up Mentoring Program allows teens who stutter to mentor children who stutter. Participants talk to each other about issues surrounding their stuttering and about other life experiences. The 19th Annual FRIENDS Convention was held in Columbus, Ohio from July 28 through July 30. Kids, teens and adults who stutter, parents and siblings of children who stutter, and speech-language pathologists gathered to participate in educational workshops and social events. The workshops this year focused on the idea of breaking down personal ”walls.” Participants considered the barriers they have built up that prevent them from being their best selves and ways to break down those barriers. Participants also examined society’s perception of people who stutter and the best ways to change that perception. Most of the attendees come back year after year. The convention empowers kids and teens who stutter. They become more confident speakers, and they have fun. Next summer, the convention will be especially exciting. It will be held in Orlando, Florida, and will commemorate the organization’s 20th anniversary. For more information, visit the FRIENDS website at www. friendswhostutter.org.
