4 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP • SEPTEMBER 2 - SEPTEMBER 8, 2016 Second “Taste of Fifth” festival caps off the summer BY MEAGHAN MCGOLDRICK [email protected] Bay Ridge residents got a little “taste” of what Fifth Avenue has to offer on Friday, August 26 at the second and fi nal installment of the inaugural “Taste of Fifth” festival. Similarly to Third Avenue’s “Summer Stroll,” Fifth Avenue was closed off to traffi c from 73rd Street to 8 4 t h Street to give families the opportunity to saunter leisurely down the strip, enjoying mouthwatering samples of food from the avenue’s best eateries and appreciating what the neighborhood has to offer. F r i d a y ’ s “taste” drew crowds in the hundreds throughout the warm- weathered evening. Sponsored by Bay Ridge’s Fifth Avenue’s BID, the event -- which took place from 6 to 10 p.m. -- promotes community business while also providing residents with the opportunity to enjoy quality time with friends and family. “It was a great event,” said Jim Clark, president of the BID. “The restaurants did really well. The crowd was a little lighter than the fi rst but it’s the end of the season. All in all, there was great participation and everybody had a great time.” The BID saw an increased vendor participation this time a r o u n d as well as added children’s activities such as games a n d rides. Remembering Danny There was a moment of re ection on Friday, August 26 at the Taste of Fifth as Rosie’s Con dence Corner – a local advocacy group – held a vigil outside of the Royal Diner for Daniel Fitzpatrick on the day before what would’ve been his 14th birthday. Fitzpatrick – a Staten Island boy who was born in Brooklyn and spent most of his childhood growing up and attending school in Bay Ridge – took his own life on August 11 after feeling bullied by his peers. Members of Rosie’s Con dence Corner, family and friends gathered just past 7:30 p.m. to light a candle for Fitzpatrick, and say a prayer for all those facing bullying. Menna Ghoniem was dressed to perform.
