Boeing 747 celebrates
50th Birthday
AIRPORT VOICE, FEBRUARY 2019 29

On February 9, 1969 the first Boeing
747-100, christened the City of Everett,
took off over Seattle on its official
maiden test flight from Paine Field in Everett,
Washington. The Boeing 747-100 was
the largest jet airliner in the world and it
began the era of increased travel by air
with hundreds of passengers on board a
flight. Today there are fewer and fewer flying
the world skies, having been replaced
by more fuel efficient and modernized aircraft,
such as the Boeing 777 and 787 airliners.
The 747 has been flying transatlantic to
JFK Airport serving many international
airports with great love and admiration
by both passengers and pilots who “really
love this plane.” Here are some photos of
the “Queen of the Skies” aircraft over the
years at JFK International Airport, many
never to be seen again.
