2015 was an interesting year for the film industry. It shattered box office records, yet some analysts remain concerned with the direction of the business. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Jurassic World” raking up a lot of dough both domestically and worldwide hid the fact that last year’s box office revenue was frontloaded with a couple of blockbuster films, while newer big budget franchises like “Tomorrowland” and smaller films flopped. Still, the movies are still generating events that audiences are flocking to see. This year seems even more promising. Even in February, typically a dead month at the cinemas, “Deadpool,” a rated-R superhero movie, surpassed all types of expectations. Could it be a sign of things to come for Hollywood? Here’s a sample of some of the more anticipated movies slated for release this year. most anticipated movies of 2016 STAR TREK BEYOND While “Star Wars” has been successfully revived and shattered virtually every box office record with “The Force Awakens,” many have forgotten the successful reboot of the other archetypal space movie. Although not the same box office juggernaut (and really, what other movie is?), “Star Trek” offered a fresh take on what became an overly complicated series in 2009. It had up-and-coming stars, great effects and a story that casual fans could get behind. It took four years for a sequel, which some didn’t love as much as the first. Then director J.J. Abrams left for the Star Wars franchise. But don’t underestimate the power of a Vulcan. “Star Trek Beyond” has the chance to fly below the radar, surpass expectations and be a fun space movie. The force proved audiences still love their space operas. FINDING DORY Pixar rarely ever gets it wrong. Sure, some films are better than others. “Up” is fantastic. “Toy Story” is unforgettable. “Wall-E” has a ton of heart. “Finding Nemo” was always one of the company’s biggest hits and for years, it was a mystery why a sequel was never made as possibilities of exploring the ocean life felt endless. Well, when an audience wants a sequel, it’s going to get one. Here comes “Finding Dory.” Named after one of the more popular characters in the film (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) and coming out 13 years after the first, expect this film to be eaten up by young and older audiences alike. That’s what Pixar and Disney are best at. Courtesy of disney.com Courtesy of startrek.com
