com foxmovies.INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE Nineties nostalgia has hit a fever pitch. There are many possible reasons why today’s adults feel the need every f o Courtesy now and then to look back at the pop culture of their childhood, but between franchise revivals, bands getting back together, and television shows coming back, it’s evident there’s a trend going on here, for better or worse. Movies have been the beneficiaries of the trend and have given the audience what they want. “Independence Day” was a massive hit in 1996. It made Will Smith a star and showed a lot of famous buildings blow up. The movie’s special effects haven’t aged well, but it’s still remembered fondly as the ultimate popcorn film. The aliens are returning 20 years later. Do audiences want to see more destruction and a battle between humans and other lifeforms with a returning cast that doesn’t include Smith? We shall see. NEIGHBORS 2 The first “Neighbors” was great, and sometimes, gross-out fun. We knew Seth Rogen had comic talent, both writing and on-screen. However, “Neighbors” also showed how funny Zac Efron could be, as the two had great chemistry. The first one was fun, thanks to seeing a married couple with a newborn interact with a bunch of frat boys and battle it out. How will it work the second time around? It’s always tough for comedies to recreate the magic of the first (see “The Hangover” sequels) but in a world full of actionadventures, we need all the comedies we can get. SUICIDE SQUAD Another superhero movie, sort of… In a further attempt to expand the DC cinematic universe, Warner Bros. is trying something that could potentially be a fresh and interesting take on these kinds of movies. A collection of Batman villains is forced to team up on a mission to save the world? “Suicide Squad” touts an amazing group of actors, led by Will Smith and Jared Leto, who is given the task of playing the iconic Joker, a character done well by Jack Nicholson in 1989 and flawlessly in 2008 by the late Heath Ledger. Those are big shoes to fill, but it should be interesting to watch unfold this Bros different take on one of the most notable villains of all time coupled Warner by a great actor in Leto himself. Margot Robbie is going to play Harley Quinn, a character fans have been waiting to see. Seeing Smith as a ‘villain’ will also be fun. Many fans have said they’re of Courtesy more excited to see this movie than “Batman v Superman.” Whether it will be received as well remains to be seen. It does show that audiences want something new with their comic book movies. most anticipated movies of 2016
