The Cardinal Spellman Girls’ Basketball
Team captured their fi rst
CHSAA state championship since 1999
with a series of victories over teams
ranging from Long Island to Staten Island
to Buffalo. In the fi rst round of the
Archdiocesan playoffs, Spellman defeated
St. Joseph Hill 74 – 39, led by Jada
Rogers with 19 points, Shanice Sinclair
with 15 and Brianna Diaz scoring 12. In
the next round the Pilots beat Moore
Catholic of Staten Island, and then went
on to defeat St. John’s Prep of Queens to
win the New York City Catholic Schools
Championship in a convincing 56 – 36
victory. Brianna Diaz led all scorers
with 14 points, followed closely by Jada
Rogers and Jahajah Shaw. Then on Saturday,
March 9, the Cardinal Spellman
Team defeated St. John the Baptist
of Long Island by a score of 58 – 47 to
win the CHSAA State Championship.
Leading scorers for the game played at
Fordham University’s gym were Jada
Rogers with 14 points and Scarlet Vargas
with 11. Before the Championship
game the team was also victorious in
a semi-fi nal match over Sacred Heart
Academy of Buffalo, winning by nearly
thirty points. Led by longtime Coach
Jane Morris, the girls will head to
Glens Falls NY on March 23 to play in
the NY State Federation Tournament
which features the top Catholic and
public schools in the state.
