BRONX SCENE
Women take center stage at BMHC ‘s Women’s History Month
To celebrate Women’s History
Month, WHEDco’s Bronx Music Heritage
Center (BMHC) is celebrating
women’s contributions to music and
dance through a series of events in
which women take center stage.
On Thursday, March 14 at 7 p.m.,
the BMHC will host Spirit of Aña:
Trap Drums, featuring women who
play the drum set, the only instrument
invented in the United States.
The event –which is free and open to
the public–will present talented female
drummers, including Sylvia
Cuenca, Sherrie Maricle, Lucianna
Padmore, Elena Conn and Elena Bonomo.
Then, on Saturday, March 16 at 7
p.m., the BMHC will host another edition
of Bronx Rising, a monthly series
that provides a platform for Bronx
arts and artists.
This edition, titled Bronx Rising!
La Petenera: Woman of Mystery, focuses
on the folkloric mysterious
power of women, as inspired by the
legend of “la petenera,” which speaks
of a beautiful woman singer, a femmefatale,
or a mermaid. The petenera
is a music form present in different
genres, from Spain to Mexico.
This event will showcase Spanish
fl amenco, Mexican son huasteco, son
guerrense and son jarocho forms of the
song, with performances by Alfonso
Cid, Daniela Morena, Martha Zarate-
Alvarez & Mazarte Dance Company,
Jarana Beat and others. There will be
snacks for sale by Yalizsa Bakes! General
admission is $7, $5 for students
and seniors, and free for kids 12 and
under, as well as residents of the Intervale
Green affordable housing development.
Finally, the BMHC will be hosting
a special Living Legends Concert at
the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture,
Repetory Theater, honoring Luz
Soliz, a champion of Garifuna culture
through music, dance and language,
best known for her well-established
dance troupes.
The event, which will take place on
Saturday, March 23 at 7 p.m., also falls
within Garifuna Heritage Month, and
will be hosted by Kathy Hill, with performances
by Wabafu Garifuna Dance
Theater, the Garifuna Jazz Ensemble,
and more.
Tickets can be purchased at the
Box Offi ce or at www.hostoscenter.

Judge Judy spoke to Schneps Media
president & publisher Schneps-Yunis
Schneps Media is thrilled to announce
the debut of an all-new Brooklyn
Paper Radio podcast, which is returning
to the airwaves as one of the
fi rst digital programs under the company’s
streaming arm, Schneps Broadcasting.
The Brooklyn Paper Radio will return
with weekly Tuesday episodes
chock full of local news you need to
know, including exclusive interviews,
deeper dives into its stories that are
driving conversations across Kings
County, and expertly curated lists of
where to go and what to do in the better
borough.
But to celebrate its launch, co-hosts
Anthony Rotunno, Brooklyn Paper’s
editor-in-chief, and Johnny Kunen,
whom some listeners will remember as
“Jimmy” the producer, welcomed Schneps
Media President and Publisher
Victoria Schneps-Yunis for a very special
episode this week, featuring a mustlisten
interview between the Brooklynbred
Schneps-Yunis and another local
luminary, the Hon. Judith Sheindlin
— whom millions of television viewers
know better as Judge Judy.
The two forged a friendship as classmates
at Midwood’s James Madison
High School, back when kids were more
familiar with their neighbors than their
JUDY SHEINDLIN (JUDGE JUDY)
smartphones, according to the judge.
“You knew your neighbors and your
neighbors knew you,” Sheindlin said.
“It was a closer community and we
weren’t tied together by machines the
way children are now.”
The women only strengthened their
bond as each pursued their equally accomplished
careers, with both offering
some sound advice to young professionals
looking to kick-start their own professional
journeys.
For that, however, you’ll have to tune
in to the full show, which is live now on
BrooklynPaper.com, and, of course,
available via one of the many fi ne services
that stream the beloved podcast.
And don’t forget to come back next
week for the fi rst full episode of the new
Brooklyn Paper Radio.
