FIERI Scholarship Fund and Manhattan College partnership

The FIERI Scholarship Fund and
Manhattan College have partnered
to develop a new and innovative initiative
entitled ‘Connessioni: Networking
for your Future.’ They are providing a
forum for college students to meet with
Italian American professionals in law,
business, health care, education, government
and the nonprofi t sectors to
learn the importance of networking
and the value of learning the Italian
language.
The keynote speaker will be Judge
Francis Nicolai (retired Administrative
Judge of New York’s Ninth Judicial
District).
The networking event will take
place at Manhattan College, Kelly
Commons 4.01, on Wednesday, March
27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Lawrence S. Bacow, President of
Harvard University and one of the
most widely respected leaders in
American higher education, will address
Success Academy’s graduating
class at its commencement exercises
on Thursday, June 6. The Class of 2023,
so-named for their anticipated college
graduation date, is the second cohort
of scholars to graduate from New York
City’s top-performing public charter
school network.
Prior to becoming the 29th president
of Harvard in June 2018, Bacow
was the Hauser Leader-in-Residence
at the Harvard Kennedy School of
Government’s Center for Public Leadership
and served as a member of the
Harvard Corporation, the university’s
governing board. Bacow was president
of Tufts University from 2001 to 2011
and was past Chancellor and chair of
the Faculty at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology. Known for his commitment
to expanding student opportunity
at Tufts, Bacow was appointed
by former President Barack Obama to
the White House Board of Advisors on
Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
While president of Tufts from 2001
to 2011, Bacow emerged as a nationally
recognized champion of expanding access
to higher education through needbased
student aid, while also advocating
vigorously for federal support of
university-based research. Bacow
launched Tufts’ Offi ce of Institutional
Diversity and highlighted inclusion as
a cornerstone of the university’s excellence.
Before his time at Tufts, Bacow
spent 24 years on the faculty of MIT,
where he held the Lee and Geraldine
Martin Professorship of Environmental
Studies. He is the author or coauthor
of four books and numerous
scholarly articles on topics related
to environmental policy, economics,
land- use law, negotiation, and occupational
health and safety. At Tufts,
he held faculty appointments in fi ve
academic departments: Urban and Environmental
Policy, Economics, Civil
and Environmental Engineering, Public
Health, and the Fletcher School of
Law and Diplomacy. Bacow attended
college at MIT, and went on to earn

three degrees from Harvard: a J.D.
from Harvard Law School, an M.P.P.

go on shopping trips every

Kmart ,as well as theatre excursions,
boat trips, special luncheons

En Foco announces the 10 Fellowship
winners of its 2019 Photography
Fellowship Program who were selected
from a pool of 107 applicants. In addition
to the $1,000 award the Fellowship
recipients will participate in the 2019
Fellowship Group Exhibition (opening
Wednesday, June 19 at the Longwood
Art Gallery @ Hostos; and will be featured
in En Foco’s Spring/Summer issue
of Nueva Luz in print and online
editions. The Fellowship initiative not
only affi rms En Foco’s ongoing commitment
to the fi nancial support of
artists of color, it also serves to inform
exhibition organizers and curators of
an existing pool of quality under recognized
artists.
En Foco’s 2019 Photography Fellowship
winners are Damarys Alvarez,
Melanie Gonzalez, Jerry Lim,
Ruben Ramirez, Roger Richardson,
Tiffany Smith, Aaron Turner, Virginia
Inés Vergara, Derick Whitson,
and D’Angelo Lovell Williams.
The Fellowship winners selected
are based on the excellence and quality
of the work submitted. All work is
reviewed by panelists who are all distinguished
members of the arts community:
Stephanie Lindquist, former
director of BronxArtSpace; Eileen
Jeng Lynch, curator of Visual Arts at
Wave Hill; and Danny R. Peralta, executive
managing director at The POINT
CDC. Alexander Campos, will curate
this year’s Fellowship exhibition and
Eva Mayhabal Davis will organize the
special issue of Nueva Luz.

NYC Health + Hospitals, the nation’s
largest public health care system
serving more than one million New
Yorkers, announced that its board of
directors has appointed Natalia Cineas,
DNP, RN, MS, as senior vice president
and chief nurse executive. As
chief nurse executive, she will lead
initiatives to support patient-centered
care and ensure patient satisfaction
as the public health system embarks
on its comprehensive, multi-year redesign
to build a competitive, sustainable
organization that will continue
to offer high-quality and accessible
health care to the people of New York
City. Dr. Cineas’ appointment is effective
March 11.

is board-certifi ed Nurse Leader with
more than 15 years in health care administration.
She most recently served
as senior director of Nursing and deputy
chief nursing offi cer at Mount Sinai
St. Luke’s. She began her career
at Columbia University Medical Center
New York Presbyterian Hospital
where she served in various roles including
the Neurosurgical Intensive
Care Unit, as a Quality Management
Specialist for the Cardiothoracic Department,
Care Director of Neurosurgery
and the Neurosurgical Intensive
Care Unit.
Dr. Cineas has a Doctorate of Nursing
Practice degree from The George
Washington University, a Masters of
Science in Management, a Bachelors
of Science from New York University,
and a Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology
from Stony Brook University.
She is adjunct faculty at Columbia
University School of Nursing where she
teaches nursing leadership courses in
the doctoral and masters level degree
programs. She is also adjunct faculty
at The College of New Rochelle where
she teaches Healthcare Politics, Nursing
Research and Leadership.
Dr. Cineas is a fellow of the New
York Academy of Medicine, Scholarship
chair of the Greater New York
Chapter of the Black Nurses Association,
Inc., member of the Greater New
York Organization of Nurse Executives
and Leaders, American Nurses
Association, American Organization
of Nurse Executives and the American
Association of Critical Care Nurses.
In 2010, Dr. Cineas was inducted as a
fellow of the Leadership Institute of
Black Nurses at New York University
(LIBN).
