Stop releasing stale
franchises
The writing is typically on the wall when
audiences are getting tired of a franchise. The
“Pirates of the Caribbean” fi lms, based on a
terrifi c ride at Disney, were huge hits. Then a fourth
entry was released, and the numbers dipped
signifi cantly.
Rather than take a hint, Disney pumped a higher
production budget for a fi fth movie and the result
was a fi lm that did well overseas, but didn’t meet
$200 million domestically. This was a franchise
whose fi lms made over $400 million at its peak
just in the states.
Even more alarming is “Transformers: The
Last Knight.” This is a huge franchise that action
director Michael Bay spent a good part of his career
on. It’s the fi fth movie of a series that should’ve
stopped after the fourth or even third. The reviews
were very poor and it won’t even crack $150 million
on an incredibly high budget.
